I’ve been doing some reading

by Gregory Snow on Feb.20, 2007, under Books, My Thoughts

For the past few months I’ve been reading Tom Friedmans’s book The World is Flat. The book is an in interesting account of many topics relating to outsourcing, information technology and the position of the United States in the global economy. Normally I don’t take something somebody tells me as is without questing it just a bit but the arguments this book presents are a bit hard for even me to question. The premise of the book is that since the advent of the internet, the fall of the Berlin Wall, China’s demcortization and America’s laziness the economic playing field of the world is becoming more level. American jobs are leaving to go off shores and this is only the beginning. In the 1900s when the internet was just becoming popular telecoms installed many miles of fiber optic cable across the ocean and around the world, including to places like India. When the Dot Com erea came to a close and the economy slowed these line were left unused they were sold off cheaply creating a huge pipe to the United States.

Friedrick makes the case that since the 1970 the educational system in the US has deteriorated both by parents who protest the amount of work teachers are assigning and by the persistent theme in educators of passing marginal pupils on to the next grade. If you’ve ever fallen into the trap in school of complaining about how hard work is get a clue and realize that if you can’t that thing then someone else will and they may just be the one to get that job.  It’s my opinion that the world is going to continue to become more and more dog eat dog and every man to his own.
